If hearing the words sushi, tempura, BBQ, and sa-ke is enough to make you hungry then Watami is a must try dining spot for you. Established in 1984 as a small Japanese restaurant, it has since exploded into a popular international dining spot. With modern architecture and excellent food, you’re bound to impress with this dining suggestion. So what makes this chain unique amongst the plethora of Japanese restaurants in Taipei? Scroll down and check it out.
The menu at Watami is arranged so that you can choose either family style or personal dishes. The cost ranges from about $80NT for small appetizers to $230NT for more extravagant sushi rolls. In between that price range there are many different dishes such as stone pot rice dishes, Japanese style BBQ, salads, various egg and cheese dishes, and of course many seafood dishes. If you go with a large group, there are also large combo options. If you enjoy sipping on sake, there are also a few options available, served hot or cold.
The food isn’t the best Japanese cuisine I’ve had, but it was certainly worth a try, especially considering the huge variety of options you can choose from. It’s a nice option if you have a large group with a lot of different tastes.
When visiting any of the four Watami locations in Taipei, you can expect a few things. All of the locations have a clean and modern design to them. They flow nicely and provide a nice dining atmosphere. For bigger parties, you can reserve a private seating room which usually has its own theme as well. Around dinner time, we have found that the Dunhua and Taipei Main locations can get pretty hectic and may result in longer waiting times. However, if you want to go a little further north, the Shilin location often has more availability.
Overall, Watami is a pretty decent Japanese place to check out. If you’re looking to find fine Japanese cuisine, then this probably isn’t the best choice for you as it is considered casual dining. However, the atmosphere is unique and all of the locations are kept clean. Furthermore, the food is pretty good and comes in a large variety, good for both small and large groups. It’s definitely worth checking out if you want to have a nice dinner for a decent price!
