Lighthouse Hostel (微光。宅) is the perfect example that great treasures are often hidden in unknown alleys of a city. Located near the Yanshui river and not far from Zhonghua North Road,a huge avenue with a lot of local shops and restaurants the Lighthouse hostel sits between restful beauty and the bustle on Tainan.
The hostel takes bookings over the phone and through its Facebook page. Our stay was organised few days in advance, and everything was set out very clearly, meaning we didn’t need to make any special arrangements!
Staying at Wei Lighthouse was refreshing, but you will sacrifice a little bit of convenience for quality. Wei Lighthouse is close to the Anping area, but far from the city center.
*side note: if you are going to Tainan anyway, I recommend you rent a scooter near the train station. It is cheap and you can get a 50cc with no license!
As we were parking our scooter, we saw a man walking by who just happened to be the owner. Very friendly, he walked us in the hostel and right away I was seriously impressed with the look and feel of the place. The ceiling was very high and it felt like entering in a huge house (it was actually the case but we didn’t know…).
We took off our shoes and noticed the cool marble under our feet, which was a welcome surprise on this hot spring day.
The whole family was up and about, cleaning the house. And when I say cleaning, I mean really cleaning. Everything was immaculate, not a single dust or hair, or anything…!
The daughter came after a minute or two and offered us some tea and chatted a bit. She and the family were really welcoming so it didn’t feel like a huge hotel chain where you barely say two words. She told us that this house is actually her childhood house, and they couldn’t give it up so they decided to turn it into a hostel.
We were luck to get the “Twilight” Room, with a magnificent view over the river while admiring the sunset. You can even see the top of Fort Zeelandia from the balcony.
The location was perfect. We have stayed in Tainan multiple times, but this was definitely the most refreshing. The rooms are very well separated from the neighbors, immaculate and charming, most coming with their own brand new bathroom and all having very nice and very comfortable beds.
Being on the Yanshui river, the area was quiet, dark and perfect for a good nights sleep. Not to mention we were close to all of the attractions we wanted to see. In fact, there is a secret road behind the hostel that leads straight to the Fort Zeelandia area, and be accessed by scooter and bicycle. Also getting to the city center was only about a 15 minute drive by scooter.
Lighthouse also provides free bicycles for use and there is a nice bike path going around the river!
There are 4 rooms in total at Lighthouse, ours being the top choice. But there is also the Summer room, the sunrise room, and one giant room with two full size beds and a sitting area with a sofa. This room also has a very nice balcony.
I recommend lighthouse for: group trips as you can rent the whole house, families due to their huge rooms and, of course, couples looking for a romantic getaway. Basically, this place is for everyone with the exception of backpackers looking to do it on the cheap!
