You would think that when living in Taiwan’s biggest city, it should be easy to get some Taiwanese food anytime you want right? Well, it really isn’t… especially when you are looking for good quality Taiwanese food late at night. For those of us who eat late and crave quality, there is 二嫂米粉湯 (Er Sao Mi Fen Tang ( Second Sister-In-Law’s Rice Noodle Soup)). This traditional Taiwanese restaurant sits on Fu Xing S. Rd. right next to the 24 hour congee area, and it’s open all night long baby!

The Food

Traditional food is, by nature, a little redundant, and traditional Taiwanese food is no different. However, just like the difference between good and bad pasta, Taiwanese food also has a standard to maintain.

Er Sao offers what you would expect from a Taiwanese restaurant: rice, soup, noodles, and unidentifiable vegetables and animal parts. However, we gotta say that the food here really is a cut above the rest. The flavor of even a simple dish like 魯肉飯 (lu rou fan/pork rice) is rich and tasty. The same goes for most of the dishes we tried, such as the 擔仔麵, 豬耳朵,地瓜葉, etc.

Of course, we might be hard-pressed to say Er Sao is the best Taiwanese place we have ever tried. But with cheap prices and a near 24 hour time slot (9 AM to 6 AM), this restaurant is certainly convenient and worth every dollar. Also, unlike many Taiwanese places, Er Sao has got some style to it…

The Environment

Many of Taiwan’s restaurants with cracked, discolored walls, cockroaches, and questionable food items are not without character. In fact, they are a large part of Taiwan’s charm, and one of the many reasons we love it here. However, sometimes it’s nice to see a more modern approach to Taiwanese cooking, or in Er Sao’s case, a modern take on traditional design?

Er Sao is decked out with traditional Chinese/Taiwanese decor with a bit of a modern twist. It’s a very clean design, and they keep it tidy as well. It makes for an interesting environment that is easy on the eyes.

The restaurant is a pretty good size, but the tables are spaced out, which limits seating. Luckily, Er Sao makes food quickly and also offers take-out for people on the go.

Wrap Up

Er Sao is nice-looking restaurant with good prices and good food (as long as you like Taiwanese). The restaurant is convenient, clean, and open most of the night. If you find yourself hungry after a night of clubbing or just after a long day of work, this is a good restaurant for both hanging out in and getting a quick bite.
